3/4 physical mockups

for class 3.4.15

Refining/redrawing morphological analysis

First three annotations (all hand-held paper documents)

3.

These are evidently in the very early stages. Each one has a different form, and varies in display of information. For next class, though, I want to get a little more creative. I like the way the first booklet shown has lots of space for information, but I want to look at a more non-traditional type of annotation that people will remember (verses a little paper handout).

Articulating three main points of issue in a more concise way:
1. There is a worldwide dependency on oil
2. Because the land (with oil) is so valued competition arises among different countries and groups of people for control and protection of the area.
3. Through complex global alliances, bloodshed is constant.
Below is my initial word map, which is not the easiest to read, so I re-did in following picture

I turned my "word map" into more of a concept map.

booklet beginnings

front cover

Very early stage of creating a booklet to accompany my space. I introduced the triangle pattern for the first time, which can actually symbolize a bird. After critique with Kidwell, there are many changes that I'm looking forward to make:
- add imagery
- less text on each frame (shouldn't be a chore to read)
- change copy text
- make the pages bigger
- play with scale

Oil Kills Peace study

In 2008, Australian artist Mark Gowing was awarded the Gold Medal for his poster "Oil Kills Peace" at the 20th International Warsaw Poster Biennale in Warsaw, Australia. This piece is composed of a dying peace dove that is falling. The dove is made of a shiny/relfective oil and is rendered with little detail. It is set on a white background. The piece is oriented vertically, the dove also vertical, positioned facing downward. Gowing created this to draw awareness to the negative implications of greed and power in Iraq and in the Middle East regarding control for oil, including recent hostilities. Though the discovery of oil has helped nations in the Middle East achieve social and technological progress, it has also very clearly enabled devastation through greed and abuse of power, such as with Saddam Hussein, squandering money to wage war on neighbors and Syria's Bashar al-Assad waging war and oppression on his own people (5). In the 1930s, oil was found in Saudi Arabia by Standard Oil of California (1). Not only is war involving local areas, but actually bringing in and costing Western power, involvement and lives (1).

2/24 physical build of space

Architecturally, I believe I've settled with my final design.  Attached are some pictures of a mockup of that, with some graphics inside. *the pins represent some sort of fence or railing.

form of space

Today, I spent time looking at the interior space. I know I wanted an open and accessible roof, but I needed to see how that would interact with the space inside.

After some initial sketches of trying to figure out how a ramp could work (with consideration of how tall a person would be), I came to a conclusion for now. The more refined design is the one rendered on Illustrator (the proportions are off). The blue area is where the path of the walker. The stairs are excluded from this drawing, but they are a simple set that come up to the opening seen on the left side of the roof. There are still obvious little changes I need to make in that overall drawing, but I feel confident with the idea. I'm thinking of maybe adding some lights so that at night the roof is lit up, or some important image/representation of Parker can be seen. Now it's time to design graphics and the interior!

space sketching

These are super initial, but I definitely want to incorporate a big window of some sort, and then I think it would be fun to add some sort of deck (still unsure if this is even possible ha).
